Nigel Benn has been discussing his son’s recent and significant weight cut ahead of his fight with Ryan Garcia.
Conor Benn has looked rather drawn in photos that have emerged of him in the final days before he weighs in later today. He has to make the welterweight limit of 147lbs for the first time since 2022.
In the four years since, he has twice fought as high as 160lbs when he took on Chris Eubank Jr, losing the first fight but winning the second on points.
Last time out in April he came down to 150lbs to fight former champion Regis Prograis and though he won on points, he appeared to lack the power he once carried earlier in this career.
On Saturday, he faces his biggest challenge yet when he takes on WBC ruler and natural welterweight Ryan Garcia in Las Vegas.
Speaking to Playbook Boxing, Benn’s father has been speaking about his son’s best weight.
“He’s a literally small middleweight. He’s actually a small welterweight, just like I was, I was a small middleweight. Conor’s a small welterweight. But there is no way on God’s green earth he’s a middleweight.
“Now that he’s coming down, you will see the power. I watched him spar last week. Bang. Put the sparring partner down.”
He was then asked to clarify that he doesn’t think this weight cut will affect his performance.
“Not at all, not at all. Conor had to lose a couple of stones to get down, but he’s actually at his normal weight. His body’s adapted to every stage that he went through.”
