Nigel Benn has his eyes on a potential next opponent for his son Conor.
Conor Benn did something his father could never do this past weekend when he beat a fighter named Eubank. The fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was almost a complete reverse of the first match back in April, which saw Eubank dominate and win a unanimous points decision on that occasion.
This time around, it was Benn who took charge and boxed well behind a solid jab for 12 rounds. Eubank barely landed a shot and was even put down twice to give Benn a victory he had so desperately craved over his long-time rival, despite fighting two weights above his usual limit.
Speaking to The Ariel Helwani Show, Benn Sr has a clear view on who he wants his son to fight next, and it will involve him dropping back down to 147 lbs.
“Me personally, I want the WBC around your waist like me. I want to see him fight for the WBC against Barrios and win the WBC.”
Nigel won the WBC belt in his first world title fight against Mauro Galvano in 1992 and defended it nine times with wins over the likes of Henry Wharton and Gerald McClellan and a draw with Chris Eubank Sr in their rematch in 1993.
The WBC welterweight belt is currently held by Mario Barrios, who fought to a draw with Manny Pacquiao earlier this year, but Benn’s hopes of the fight taking place have been dealt a blow after Ryan Garcia revealed he has signed a contract to challenge Barrios next.
