Vergil Ortiz has inside information on Terence Crawford‘s plans.
The 27-year-old from Texas has enjoyed a positive professional career so far, where he remains unbeaten through 23 bouts and currently reigns as the WBC ‘interim’ super-welterweight champion.
The American knockout artist made his most recent ring appearance in February when he defeated former WBA super-welterweight champion Israil Madrimov via unanimous decision in a competitive 12-round battle in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Ortiz has been linked with a bout with four-weight world champion ‘Bud’ Crawford in recent years, with many believing that should the latter decide to compete at 154 pounds again that Ortiz presents the best match-up.
Speaking to Boxing News, however, Ortiz revealed details of a conversation he had with Crawford where he claims the pound-for-pound star has no plans to move back down.
“No, he’s not coming back to 154, I spoke to him, this is my first time saying this on media. I spoke to him and he’s not gonna come back to 154, he’s gonna fight his last two fights and retire, and you know what I respect it because he’s been undisputed at 140, at 147, get your money and get out I mean what else do you have to prove. I would to the same thing.”
Crawford will to face undisputed super-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in a Las Vegas mega fight this September. He has previously said there also may be a rematch, meaning his two final fights before retirement could be against the Mexican.
