Ryan Garcia is considering his next steps after suffering a shock defeat to Rolando Romero earlier this month.
The 26-year-old from California was floored by ‘Rolly’ in the second round of their bout at the iconic Times Square in New York on May 2, going on to suffer the second defeat of his career and losing out on the opportunity to become the WBA ‘regular’ world welterweight champion.
It was Garcia’s first ring appearance in over a year after he had been serving a suspension from the sport following a positive drugs test he had returned in the build-up to his showdown with Devin Haney last April.
Garcia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya spoke to Fight Hype and revealed which direction they are expected to go in for the 26-year-old’s next fight, ruling out a potential rematch with Devin Haney after it had originally been pencilled in to take place before the end of the year.
“No, that’s not the direction we want to go [Haney rematch], zero whatsoever. So I’m actually going to sit down with Ryan, I sat down with him already, and he’s in great spirits, we’re actually looking forward to the future and we’re just going to nail down exactly what the plans are going to be and put it in play.”
Instead, De La Hoya suggested a rematch against ‘Rolly’ would be the ‘right move’.
“Well as a fighter, speaking to you as a fighter, not a promoter, that’s exactly what I would do right? So that would be the right move for him I think, go get revenge and you know in boxing you’re as good as your last fight so might as well go.”
Should a rematch with Romero come next for ‘King Ryan’, it could eventually lead to that long-awaited second encounter with Haney, which has been asked for by boxing fans around the world since their controversial first clash over 12-months ago.
