Former fighter turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya has his concerns ahead of the controversial fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul.
This unlikely contest was originally scheduled for July but Tyson suffered an ulcer flare-up which meant it was delayed until November.
Tyson’s record is a formidable one that saw him become the youngest ever heavyweight champion aged just 19 and knockout his first 19 opponents inside six rounds.
Jake Paul, who is less than half ‘Iron Mike’s age, has fought just 11 times, losing once to Tommy Fury and winning seven times by KO but against relatively low-level opposition, novice fighters and crossover MMA stars.
Speaking to Fight Hype, De La Hoya believes that despite the age gap the fight will not be dangerous for Tyson having already fought the likes of Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Larry Holmes.
“It’s not going to be dangerous for Tyson. It will not be dangerous for Tyson because Tyson has been up in the ring with monsters. He has a chin. I”m sure he can go six rounds, seven rounds, eight rounds, you know, but I’m just worried about Tyson’s legacy. That’s it.”
He was then asked if the contest was good or bad for the sport.
“I think it will be sad for Tyson. I’m not sure which way it affects boxing because I think a lot of eyeballs will be watching”.
