The pound-for-pound debate is always a hot topic in boxing and now Oscar De La Hoya has had his say.
Several fighters have all staked their claim for the number one spot in recent months, with Terence Crawford, Oleksandr Usyk, Canelo Alvarez and Naoya Inoue each picking up big wins.
While it may be a tough choice for some, De La Hoya sees a clear frontrunner when it comes to determining who is the best, telling Fighthype that he views Crawford as the pound-for-pound number one.
“Crawford I love because he’s probably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, his style is fan friendly, he’s a tremendous boxer and undefeated.
Some observers felt that ‘Bud’ didn’t look at his best in the contest, and De La Hoya sympathised with the unbeaten star.
“He went up a weight class and met a guy that was really tough. Sometimes you’re not going to look as good as you did in your previous fights against smaller guys. It’s ok.
“It’s a learning process. He has to establish himself at 154. He probably fought the toughest guy, not the most dangerous guy but the toughest guy.”
De La Hoya then named who he wants to see Crawford take on next.
“I think Crawford and Vergil Ortiz next year first quarter will be a super fight.”
Ortiz is promoted by De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, and his chances of beating Crawford were recently discussed by Mikey Garcia Jr.
