The beef between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and his old promoter Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t seem to be dying down, with the Golden Boy chief now accusing the fighter of being ‘afraid’ to fight one rival.
De La Hoya promoted Canelo during the early part of his career, making him into one of boxing’s biggest stars. However, when the two split the super-middleweight champion publicly accused De La Hoya of trying to steal from him and other fighters – something the 51-year-old has always denied.
Tensions boiled over when the two came face to face during the press conference for Canelo vs Jamie Munguia, a fighter currently guided by Golden Boy. De La Hoya told his former fighter to ‘put some respect on his name’ and the two had to be separated by security.
The retired boxing legend has now taken to Instagram to accuse Canelo’s current team of stealing from him.
“Canelo, I’ve just seen another video where you’re still talking s**t. All you ever say is ‘f**k him, oh, he stole from me’. Obviously aside from defaming me why don’t you look inside your own circle because I know for a fact that people are stealing from you.”
He also went on to say the 33-year-old only fought Munguia because he’s afraid of facing David Benazidez.
“By the way you lined my pockets, you made me a load of money all because you’re afraid of Davis Benavidez. F**k you!”
Benavidez has long called for a clash against Canelo but, with no movement on a deal, he’s stepping up to light-heavyweight to take on former champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15.
