Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez and Terence Crawford are just months away from their monumental battle.
It was confirmed earlier this week that the pound-for-pound greats will lock horns on Saturday September 13 at an unconfirmed venue in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Canelo will make the first defence of his undisputed championship at super-middleweight in what is his second reign as champion, after he added the IBF title to his collection at the beginning of May with a points victory over William Scull.
The Mexican star faced off with Crawford just moments after his hand was raised in Riyadh on May 2, becoming the first fighter in boxing history to achieve undisputed status at 168lbs on two separate occasions.
Legendary fighter turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya has shared his thoughts on the upcoming mega-fight between the pound-for-pound stars, as he touches on the significant jump up in weight that Crawford is set to make.
“Now what the media is reporting and it’s circulating, is that Canelo Crawford is the biggest fight of the decade, I mean to a purist and a fighter it’s laughable, because you have Crawford jumping up two weight classes to fight Canelo who’s a natural light-heavyweight.
Crawford who couldn’t push back Madrimov? Life and death with Madrimov! What do you think Canelo’s gonna do to him? Run him out of the ring!”
Should ‘Bud’ be victorious against Canelo, the 37-year-old from Omaha will write his name into boxing folklore once again and become the first fighter in the history of the sport to capture an undisputed championship in three weight classes, but it could be a step too far this time for the unbeaten American.
