Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia locked horns in a controversial super lightweight showdown last year.
‘King Ry’ Garcia put on a stellar performance against the former WBC super lightweight champion, dropping him on several occasions before he was declared the winner via majority decision to become the first fighter to defeat Haney.
Garcia’s celebration came to an abrupt end shortly after however, after it was revealed that the 26-year-old from California had tested positive for the banned substance Clomifene in drugs tests in the build up. ‘King Ry’ was subsequently served with a 1-year suspension from boxing and a fine of over $1 million.
It has been speculated that a rematch between Garcia and Haney will take place before the end of 2025, although Oscar De La Hoya believes that the fight will not end up happening despite it being called for by fans and pundits around the globe.
Speaking to DAZN Boxing, ‘The Golden Boy’ believes a rematch between the fighters will not go ahead as he expects Jose Ramirez to defeat ‘The Dream’ when they lock horns on May 2.
“I feel that [Jose] Ramirez is gonna do a number on Devin Haney.
We’re not gonna see Ryan Garcia [vs.] Devin Haney 2. I believe [Jose] Ramirez will stop the show, I believe [Jose] Ramirez will do a number on Devin Haney.”
Garcia and Haney will return to action in separate fights at Times Square in New York on Friday May 2. ‘King Ry’ is pencilled in to face Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero in a welterweight bout, with Haney set to face former unified super lightweight champion Jose Ramirez in an intriguing super lightweight battle at the iconic venue in the heart of New York City.
