Jaron Ennis made his long-awaited debut at 154lbs as he dispatched of Portugal’s Uisma Lima in the opening round of their Philadelphia showdown.
The 28-year-old former unified world welterweight champion floored Lima twice before referee Shawn Clark called a halt to the contest just shy of two minutes into the 1st round, marking his debut at super-welterweight in impressive fashion.
‘Boots’ now holds the WBA ‘interim’ world super-welterweight title and could be in line for a future clash with full WBA world champion Abass Baraou, although one man in particular that remains on Ennis’ radar is unbeaten contender Vergil Ortiz Jr, who holds the WBC interim title at 154lbs.
In response to Ennis calling out his countryman just moments after his outstanding victory over Lima, Ortiz’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya posted on social media where he claims his fighter is ‘still number one’ at super-welterweight, fuelling rumours that a showdown between the duo could be on the horizon.
“Only 1 name at 154 – Vergil Ortiz”
Ortiz is set to make the second defence of his WBC super-welterweight title on Saturday November 8 as he prepares to face fellow countryman Erickson Lubin at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
The 27-year-old will be expected to come through his clash with Lubin unscathed if a potential bout with ‘Boots’ is to happen next, as reports suggest that the unbeaten American duo could be on course to meet during the early stages of 2026.
