Oscar De La Hoya has spoken out in the wake of Shakur Stevenson’s victory over William Zepeda.
Stevenson successfully defended his WBC world lightweight title against Zepeda at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York on Saturday night, defeating the hard-hitting Mexican via unanimous decision.
It was an impressive performance from the unbeaten American star, who once again showed his impressive boxing skills to keep Zepeda at bay throughout the 12-round bout to pick up his 24th consecutive professional victory.
The three judges scored the contest 118-110, 118-110 and 119-109 in favour of the 28-year-old, although Zepeda’s promoter and boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya has expressed his frustration towards these totals.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, De La Hoya admitted that whilst he was impressed with the fight itself, he was disappointed with the judges scorecards which he claims were ‘off’.
“It was a good fight, the scores were off but yeah Shakur did his thing, I think the first half was Zepeda’s, the second half was Shakur’s, you have to give it up to him.”
Stevenson could now move on to a potential unification bout with one of the other world lightweight title holders, as the boxing world remain hopeful that the 28-year-old will go on to share the ring with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis at some stage.
Davis is currently preparing for that highly anticipated rematch against Lamont Roach Jr, although an official announcement for this is yet to be made, leaving fans waiting even longer for that ‘dream fight’ between ‘Tank’ and Stevenson.
