Promoter Oscar De La Hoya has shared a fresh update after he was issued with a lawsuit from Vergil Ortiz Jr last week.

Reigning WBC interim super-welterweight champion Ortiz dealt his promoter with a detailed 32-page lawsuit in an attempt to void his contract with Golden Boy.

It comes during negotiations for a monumental clash with former unified world welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, who has openly expressed an interest in facing his countryman next.

The respective teams of Ennis and Ortiz entered talks shortly after the latter’s stoppage victory over Erickson Lubin back in November, but a deal is yet to be agreed for what could be one of the most competitive fights of the year.

Speaking to Fight Hub, De La Hoya said he is ‘looking forward’ to working alongside the unbeaten star who he says will go on to achieve great things during his career, seemingly convinced this will all be sorted in his favour.

“Well look, we have an ironclad deal with Vergil Ortiz and you know, obviously, look, I’ve never had anything wrong with Vergil. Even just two months ago I believe he was praising Golden Boy and how great of a job I’ve done for him and all that so, I don’t feel it’s Vergil Ortiz.

“I think Vergil Ortiz is a hell of a human being. His father’s amazing, the way he trains him and they’re a dynamic duo and so I’ve never had any beef with him, I’m looking forward to working together, getting the biggest fights, the most money possible and moving forward … We feel Vergil Ortiz can be and will be a multi-weight champion and he will go in there and destroy anybody who is in front of him so that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

Whilst a potential showdown between Ortiz and Ennis remains up in the air, fans around the world will be hopeful that the fight can finally be made before the end of the year.
