A fight between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Terence Crawford seems to be edging closer.
The man behind big time boxing in Saudi Arabia, Turki Alalshikh, has made it clear that a fight between the two pound-for-pound greats is top of his wish list and he’s actively working on making it happen.
Canelo has said he will only face the American, who last fought at three weight divisions below his stomping ground of super middleweight, if ‘the money is right’. With Alalshikh making his intentions clear, the Mexican might just have his demands met.
The man who promoted the four-weight world champion for much of his early career, Oscar De La Hoya, believes Crawford is by far the ‘better boxer’ and will ‘1000%’ have the beating of his former fighter. He told Chris Venegas why.
“I give Crawford all the credit in the world for even thinking about possibly fighting Canelo, but if that fight ever takes place I have Crawford 1000%.
Crawford is also a big guy. He’s a big guy who can handle a Canelo because they’re the same size.
Crawford is a guy who punches hard but he doesn’t rely on his power he relies on his footwork, he relies on his speed, he relies on his change ups, he relies on his combinations, he relies on his mind and I believe that Crawford is a way better boxer than Canelo.”
The two have not seen eye-to-eye since parting ways, clashing at a recent press conference for Canelo’s Munguia win when the Golden Boy CEO demanded the fighter ‘put some respect’ on his name.
Crawford returns to action on August 3, his super-welterweight debut against champion Israil Madrimov. Canelo is set to be out again in September, but no opponent has been announced as of writing.
