Manny Pacquiao potentially has the chance to become a world champion once again after he made a sensational return to the ring last month.
The 46-year-old eight-division world champion fought to a split decision draw against reigning WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on July 19.
Pacquiao received praise for putting on an impressive performance against ‘El Azteca’, especially considering it was his first ring appearance as a professional since he was beaten by former WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas in June of 2021.
After it was confirmed that ‘PacMan’ would be continuing with his professional career, one fighter that is interested in a showdown with the Filipino icon is newly-crowned WBA welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, who was elevated from Regular champion earlier this month.
In an interview with Boxing Scene, ‘Rolly’ expressed an interest in facing the Hall of Famer next, as he admits a showdown between himself and Pacquiao would be a ‘fan favourite’.
“A Hall of Famer on my resume, who wouldn’t want that? That’s the easiest way to get into the Hall of Fame, right?”
“We can do it. Everything has to make sense. It’s going to be a fan favourite. That makes sense right there.”
Romero made his most recent ring appearance against Ryan Garcia back in May, defeating his fellow countryman via unanimous decision at the iconic Times Square in New York City in arguably the best performance of his career to date.
‘Rolly’ was elevated to full WBA world champion earlier this month after Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis opted to vacate the crown as he prepares to make the move up to super-welterweight later this year.
