Jake Paul is just days away from his controversial heavyweight showdown with Anthony Joshua.
The 28-year-old from Phoenix is set to do battle with the two-time world heavyweight champion at the Kaseya Center in Miami on Friday December 19, the latest high-profile boxing event to be broadcast on Netflix.
Paul’s last outing came on June 28 when he defeated Mexico’s Julio Cesar Chavez Jr via unanimous decision at the conclusion of their cruiserweight bout in Anaheim, California.
As for Joshua, the 36-year-old Englishman has been out of action since he suffered a shock fifth round stoppage defeated to former IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium.
‘The Problem Child’ has been spending some time sparring a number of world ranked heavyweights in recent weeks, including two-weight world champion Lawrence Okolie.
As he enters the final few days of training for his monumental showdown with ‘AJ’, Paul has reportedly brought a secret weapon into camp which could actually play into his hands on fight night.
Speaking to SunSport, former world cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson revealed that Paul has reportedly drafted in trainer Don Charles to assist him ahead of his meeting with Joshua.
“I don’t believe Lawrence Okolie and people like that are giving him a shellacking in sparring. I think they’re taking easier with him pulling him through to getting paid healthy. Don Charles is getting paid healthy. So they’re going to go out there and try and coach him through. If you’re talking traditionally you’d get fired.”
Crucially, Charles was in the corner for Dubois when he stopped Joshua in devastating fashion last year, although their relationship has now broken down following Dubois’ defeat to former undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in July.
