Jake Paul is looking to take on a serious world champion in one of his future fights.
Paul is currently 11 and 1 in the professional game with his only loss coming against Tommy Fury. Most recently the former YouTuber took on a 58-year-old Mike Tyson and won a straightforward points victory which some in the sport called ‘scripted‘.
Paul has strongly denied those claims, but he continues to take criticism for facing ageing fighters or retried MMA stars. As such he is now setting his sights higher and looking for more legitimate opposition against which to prove himself.
In a clip shared by Fight Hype, Paul responded to the WBA president Gilberto Mendoza, who has publicly stated he would like to make a title fight against Julio César Chávez Jr.
“I want someone tougher. And I want a real belt. Not just something put up for entertainment value, so, it’s great and all but honestly he’s easy work and I want someone tougher to shut people up.”
Chávez Jr. is the son of Mexican legend Julio César Chávez and a former WBC middleweight world title holder. In 2017, he lost a famous all-Mexican battle with Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez.
Then after failing to make weight for a fight with Danny Jacobs, he controversially quit the contest in round five after claiming his nose was broken which drew much anger from the fans who began throwing beer cans into the ring.
Since then his career has been stop-start in higher weight classes and marred with issues outside of the ropes. Most recently he fought former UFC fighter Uriah Hall in July and won a unanimous decision.
