The fallout from Ben Whittaker‘s clash with Liam Cameron continues to unfold.
The fight ended controversially when Whittaker and Cameron fell to the outside of the ring, with Whittaker revealing he had suffered an injury and could no longer continue.
It meant the bout had to go to the scorecards, and was given as a technical decision draw, but many onlookers have questioned the validity of the injury due to Cameron seemingly beginning to take over in the contest.
One of those is former two-weight world champion Paulie Malignaggi, who told ProBoxTV that he feels Whittaker didn’t want any further part of the fight.
“I thought he quit. But my problem is the commentating. Everyone is looking for a way to cover it up for him.
“He threw himself onto the ropes and he had his arms around Cameron’s arms, so when he threw himself he just pulled the guy with him and flipped over. Yes the guy is in his face and it’s physical, but he flipped.”
It has since been claimed by BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom that Whittaker suffered an ankle sprain and aggravated a neck injury in the incident, but Malignaggi again has his doubts.
“The ankle I give him credit for, even the commentators couldn’t figure out the ankle.”
Fans, pundits and fellow fighters alike have now campaigned for a rematch to take place. Shalom has said that he believes it will happen but it depends on his man’s recovery.
The fight was taking place on the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol card, with Beterbiev narrowly winning to become undisputed light-heavyweight champion.
