Peter Fury Makes It Clear What Tyson Fury Must Do To Beat Usyk: “The Strategy Was All Wrong”

Both Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk have admitted mistakes were made in their first fight in May.

The much anticipated undisputed showdown between the two modern-day heavyweight greats lived up to expectations. It was a close fight with both men having moments of success and plenty of back and forth across the 12 rounds.

The most significant blows came in the ninth round however when Fury was caught and sent wobbling around the ropes before being given a count.

It was that which separated the two men at the conclusion of the fight with Usyk being handed a majority decision to take home all four major titles as well as the lineal and Ring Magazine belt.

Speaking to Froch on Fighting, ‘The Gypsy Kings’ uncle Peter Fury, who trained Tyson for his upset win over Wladimir Klitschko back in 2015, claimed the wrong ‘tippy-tippy’ approach was taken to the fight.

“I think he can. We’re looking at a big man 6ft8, 9 who wanted to have a tippy-tippy match with someone who is an elite move and elite boxer. So I think they got the strategy all wrong for that fight.”

He was then asked what he made of the corner work which was a confusion of voices.

“I’m an avid believer that one man should give the instructions. Who is the trainer? If his dad’s the trainer let his dad do the talking. If the other guy from America is the trainer, let him do the talking. If there’s three or four talking how you going to listen to that?”

Finally, he suggested Fury should win if he uses his size correctly.

“How much is he going to dig down and will he get the right advice, who is going to do it? All these things play a factor. If you’ve got two elite fighters together the big one should over come the small one in a boxing match because of the attributes, if he uses his size, distance and weight correctly.”

The rematch takes place on December 21 when both men will be hoping to tighten up and improve on their first performance.
