After crossing paths with a number of elite opponents during his career, Shawn Porter has named which of the fighters he faced possessed the best jab overall.
‘Showtime’ had an impressive professional career of his own, winning a version of the world welterweight championship on two separate occasions prior to his retirement from the sport.
His first world title triumph came in December of 2013 when he outpointed countryman Devon Alexander to capture the IBF welterweight title at the Barclays Center in New York City.
Porter’s second reign as world champion began in 2018 when he produced arguably the best victory of his career, defeating Danny Garcia by unanimous decision to claim the vacant WBC welterweight crown.
In a feature with The Ring Magazine, Porter reflected on his 2014 showdown with Kell Brook as he claims the retired British star had the best jab of each opponent he faced during his professional career.
“He had a strong jab, and he had a great game plan. His game plan was to catch me with that jab on the way in, smother me, so I couldn’t get off on him – it worked to a tee.”
Brook handed Porter the first defeat of his career when they locked horns in August 2014, defeating ‘Showtime’ via majority decision to walk away with the IBF world welterweight title and produce one of the greatest away wins of any British fighter in boxing history.
Porter competed for the final time in 2021, with his final record reading 31 wins from 36 professional fights.
