Russian heavyweight Alexander Povetkin, 31-1-(23), knocked out late replacement Johann “Reptile” Duhaupas (34-4, 21 KOs) at the Ekaterinburg Expo Center in Ekaterinburg, Russia on Saturday.
Povetkin out-boxed Duhaupas early on before upping the pace in the fourth round to hurt Duhaupas, who stepped in at 24 hours notice after original opponent Bermane Stiverne pulled out after Povetkin failed a drug test, meaning the mandatory No.1 spot for Deontay Wilder’s WBC heavyweight title was not at stake.
Povetkin landed a massive left hook to knock out Duhaupas out after 2.59 of the sixth round.
Povetkin failed a drug test before the fight and the WBC withdrew their heavyweight interim title as a result.
