Terence Crawford has a huge task ahead of him when he fights Canelo Alvarez.
The two pound-for-pound stars will meet in Las Vegas in September, with Crawford stepping up two weight divisions from super-welterweight to super-middleweight for the clash.
‘Bud’ has only ever fought once above welterweight, coming in his last contest when he defeated Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision to win the WBA belt at 154lbs.
It was a performance that some boxing fans felt was slightly underwhelming, believing that the jump to 168lbs to fight Alvarez could be a step too far.
One man that knows ‘Bud’ extremely well is Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, having guided a large portion of Crawford’s career on his journey to becoming a four-weight world champion.
The legendary promoter has now given his take on the match-up with Alvarez, telling Fight Hub TV that he believes the Mexican superstar will ‘wipe the floor’ with his former fighter.
“I think Canelo wipes the floor with him. I love Crawford, I told you when Crawford was fighting Spence that Crawford would beat the hell out of him.
But Canelo is a different proposition. It’s an interesting fight, but I think there’s only one winner. Canelo is used to fighting at a particular level and I don’t think that Terence can hurt Canelo, but Canelo can hurt Terence.”
Before the fight against Crawford can take place, Alvarez will first go up against IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull in May, looking to add that belt to his WBC, WBA and WBO titles and once again become undisputed at 168lbs.
