Retired Super-Middleweight Legend Says ‘Bad Boy’ Benavidez Will Put ‘Scared’ Canelo To Sleep

A super-middleweight clash between current unified champion Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez and former champion David Benavidez is perhaps the fight fans want to see more than any other in the sport.

Benavidez has been chasing the bout for the past few years, but Canelo has not shown much interest in making it happen, slapping a $200m price tag on his signature.

‘The Mexican Monster’ grew tired of waiting for his title opportunity and decided to move up to light-heavyweight for his last outing – a division he has decided to remain in and is now in prime position to face the winner of the undisputed bout between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol next month.

One man who is sure how the fight goes if the two did ever meet in the ring is retired 168lbs champion and Hall of Fame inductee, James Toney.

Speaking to FightHub TV about the potential match-up, Toney accused Alvarez of being afraid to face his rival.

“Benavidez is a bad boy. He wants to fight, he’s trying to f**k you up. They are the type of fighters I like. Everyone knows how James Toney used to fight, we’re coming for the lights out.

Canelo has little nuts. That’s all it is, he’s scared to death, Canelo is scared.”

‘Lights Out’ went on to predict a knockout victory for Benavidez.

“Canelo knows that if he fights Benavidez then he’s getting knocked out – he’s going to sleep! It doesn’t matter when he fights him, if he fights him right now he’ll steam roll him.”

Canelo is back in the ring on September 14 when he defends his titles against unbeaten Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas.
