It’s been eight years since James Toney last fought as a professional, but the 56-year-old wants to lace the gloves up once again.
‘Lights Out’ won world titles in three weight divisions during his impressive career, rising to prominence throughout the early to mid 1990’s.
He boasts victories over the likes of Mike McCallum, Evander Holyfield, Danny Garcia, Iran Barkley and Michael Nunn, and it wasn’t until his 47th professional bout when he was beaten for the first time by Roy Jones Jr in 1994.
Toney also challenged for the world heavyweight championship on two occasions, defeating John Ruiz for the WBA crown before the result was overturned after he failed a drugs test, followed by a split decision draw against Hasim Rahman in 2006.
Speaking to ESNEWS, Toney revealed he is open to making a shock return to the ring in 2025 for ‘one more’ fight, naming Jake Paul as a potential opponent.
“One more! We’re trying, but everybody’s scared. As you’ve already seen, every time I say Jake Paul, he turns the other way. It’s no problem if he wants to fight me, I’m gonna knock your a** out.”
Despite the belief he has in himself to make a sensational comeback to boxing, Toney faces the risk of suffering the same fate that heavyweight legend Mike Tyson suffered at the end of last year.
‘Iron’ Mike was defeated over eight rounds by Jake Paul at the AT&T Stadium in Texas last November, with much of the boxing community expressing their concerns on how the bout was ever sanctioned.
