Canelo Alvarez is one of boxing’s biggest stars but that also means he gets his fair share of criticism.
His list of accomplishments in the sport is never-ending, from becoming undisputed champion at super-middleweight, to being involved in some of the biggest pay-per-view events in history.
There are still some opponents out there that fans believe could have what it takes to defeat the Mexican superstar, including David Benavidez, who has spent the past couple of years on a mission to secure a fight against Alvarez.
A retired middleweight world champion has now joined the list by claiming they would have beaten Canelo, and that is his former promoter and now rival Oscar De La Hoya.
The relationship between De La Hoya and Canelo has been fractured ever since they stopped working together in 2020, and the pair had to be separated earlier this year during a press conference for the fight between Alvarez and Jaime Munguia.
Their feud appears to show no signs of slowing down, as a clip captured by Fight Hub TV shows De La Hoya revealing what he thinks would happen if he fought Canelo during his active career.
“Canelo? Come on. In my prime I would have tapped that a** so good. Easy, quick. Easy work. He’s flat footed. He walks on quick sand.”
De La Hoya ended his boxing career with a record of 39 wins and 6 defeats, becoming a six-weight world champion in the process, and he has recently hit out at one of his former world title opponents.
