A former undisputed world champion is targeting some huge names ahead of his long-awaited comeback to the sport, including Errol Spence Jr and Jaron Ennis.
Former unified welterweight champion Spence is on the verge of making a comeback of his own, after it was revealed last week that the 35-year-old is set to face Australia’s Tim Tszyu in a non-title bout this summer.
As for ‘Boots’ Ennis, the unbeaten American star remains on course to become a two-weight world champion this year, although he will be expected to defeat countryman Vergil Ortiz Jr next with reports suggesting that the unbeaten duo will face each other at some stage in 2026.
One man who is keen on locking horns with both Spence and Ennis is former undisputed light-middleweight champion Jermell Charlo, who has not fought since he was defeated by Canelo Alvarez back in September 2023.
Speaking on the Cigar Talk podcast, Charlo responded to claims that Spence dominated him in a past sparring session before he urges his countryman to ‘go against him’ in a potential showdown.
“I was fu**ing s**t up. What the f**k you talking about? I was a dog. Nobody handled me any type of way. Nobody did none of that s**t that they [said], whatever the f**k they talking about. What Derrick [James] seen? How about you go back and hire Derrick again and then y’all go against me by myself.”
In the same interview, Charlo later sent a message to Ennis’ promoter Eddie Hearn, as he claims he would be open to also facing the former WBA and IBF welterweight champion upon his return to the sport.
“I have wrote Eddie Hearn. Hello, Eddie. Please, answer my DMs if you see this message. He gonna see it. I want you to set up something between me an your best fighter Boots.”
Whilst it remains to be seen whether Charlo will actually make his long-awaited return to action this year, the 35-year-old appears to be brimming with confidence as he looks to make up for lost time and potentially become a world champion once again before his career comes to an end.
