Former Rival Says Tyson Fury Would Sack John Fury If He Wasn’t His Father: “Usyk Will Win Again”

Discussions have continued around the corner work of Tyson Fury’s team during his last fight back in May.

That undisputed contest between ‘The Gypsy King’ and Ukrainian southpaw Oleksandr Usyk was the first in the heavyweight division in almost 25 years. It was a close contest that saw Usyk run out points winner after securing a vital 10-8 round in the ninth having caught Fury with a powerful left hook.

In the final few rounds, the corner of Fury seemed to be giving conflicting advice with father John and coach Sugar Hill Stewart both talking over one another.

Since the final bell, Fury has stated he will be keeping the same people in his corner for the rematch in December when he will try to avenge his first-ever loss in the professional ring.

One man who beat Fury in the amateur ranks was David Price, who outpointed his fellow Brit in 2016. At one stage Price was Britain’s next big heavyweight hopeful and a fight against Fury in the professional ranks looked like a formality, but back to back defeats to Tony Thompson shelved the match-up.

Now retired, Price was asked by Seconds Out about the decision to stick with the same corner and thinks it makes sense.

“Not surprised, it’s his dad at the end of the day. Obviously words would have been said and crossed if he thought it was unhelpful for the being so much carnage in the corner between rounds, especially in the later rounds. It’s something that’s probably been addressed between themselves. I’m sure the conversations have been had to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Price did however claim that had there not been a family relationship things might be different.

“If it wasn’t his dad and it was just another trainer I think he would probably have sacked him and not had him involved in the next fight but aside from the chaos and the carnage in the corner Fury more than likely definitely values other attributes that his dad brings to the table by being part of his corner. He probably sees the positives outweighing the negatives. He obviously brings something to Fury when he’s part of the team.”

On who he thinks will come out victorious in the rematch, price is predicting repeat rather than revenge.

“I think the rematch will be another Usyk points win.”

In the wake of the fight, Fury claimed he had too much fun in the ring which is why he lost and Mike Tyson recently suggested Fury will win the rematch if he takes it seriously.
