Lamont Roach has spoken out about the punching power of Gervonta Davis ahead of his upcoming clash with Jake Paul.
‘Tank’ Davis is gearing up to make his much anticipated return to the ring against Paul next month as they prepare to battle in a ten round exhibition contest at the Kaseya Center in Miami on Friday November 14.
The 30-year-old from Baltimore has not fought since his WBA lightweight title defence against Roach back in March was declared a majority decision draw, although many fans and analysts believe Davis should have been handed the first defeat of his career.
Speaking in the post-fight press conference, Roach shared his thoughts on the punching power of his former rival, who is setting his sights on becoming the first fighter to knock out Paul next month.
“He got decent power. He got decent power for sure. I ain’t going to say it’s exaggerated. I just told you I got a chin. I ain’t going like that. It’s just not going to happen.
“But like I said, I see why he knock people out. I just think he felt my power too. I think that’s what negated a lot of his shots. Once I took his best shot, I was like, oh, yeah, it’s time to roll. Like I said, I knew I had a chin. I sparred guys that were like junior middleweights, like current champions that was at that weight. So I know I can take a punch.
“He’s twitchy in there. I do see why he knock people out. I mean, like being up close and personal, obviously I seen it on the TV like that. But I understand why he knock people out.”
It was announced in a press conference last month that there would be a maximum weight limit of 195lbs in place for both Davis and Paul, who will also be required to wear 12oz gloves on fight night.
Paul weighs at least 60 pounds heavier than ‘Tank’ on average, as well as standing at a staggering eight inches taller than the unbeaten three-division world champion.
