Lamont Roach came close to handing Gervonta Davis the first defeat of his professional career earlier this year.

Roach put on a career best performance against the reigning WBA lightweight champion at the Barclays Center in New York City back in March, although their controversial match-up was declared a majority decision draw after a closely fought 12 rounds.

‘Tank’ Davis sensationally took a knee to the canvas during the ninth round, but referee Steve Willis failed to rule this as an official knockdown to effectively squander Roach’s chances of dethroning his countryman in what would have been a big upset.

‘The Reaper’ had been close to finalising a rematch with Davis before these plans were shelved after ‘Tank’ opted to face YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in an exhibition clash later this year instead.

Posting on social media, Roach expressed his frustration towards Davis yet again after the unbeaten lightweight star gave his reasons for choosing to face Paul rather than ‘The Reaper’ next.

“Every time he gotta explain why he fighting Jake”

It remains to be seen when exactly Roach will make his return to the ring, with rumours circulating in recent days that he could be set to step up to super-lightweight in order to take on current WBC interim super-lightweight champion Isaac Cruz in December.

Competing at 140lbs would be the heaviest that Roach has fought at in his career, and he still holds the WBA world title at super-featherweight, making one successful defence of his crown against Feargal McCrory back in June of 2024.
