Robert Garcia is viewed by many as being one of the best boxing trainers in the world.

After a successful career of his own that saw him win the IBF super-featherweight title, Garcia became a boxing trainer and has worked with some of the biggest names in the sport.

He has trained over 15 world champions, including the likes of Anthony Joshua, Nonito Donaire and Bam Rodriguez, along with rising stars like super-welterweight sensation Vergil Ortiz.

When it came to deciding who the most talented he ever trained was, he told TalkSport that while it was a tough decision – and that he would omit Mikey Garcia due to the family ties – there was one man who was above the rest.

“If we are talking about talent, discipline and heart then Bam Rodriguez, Vergil Ortiz and Nonito Donaire are up there. I try to keep family out of my favourites because that is my brother Mikey [Garcia]. Mikey was very talented but if I had to single out one I would probably stick with Nonito Donaire. He was a warrior and an absolutely fantastic fighter.”

Donaire is a four-weight world champion, having picked up world honours at flyweight, bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight.

He is the oldest boxer in history to win a bantamweight world title at the age of 38, and competed as recently as June 2025 at the age of 42, with his record standing at 43 wins and 8 defeats.

Along with naming the best fighter he ever trained, Garcia also recently gave his verdict on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight, which ‘Bud’ won by unanimous decision.
