Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez continues to carve out his legacy in the sport of boxing.
In 66 bouts he has lost just twice – both on points to Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol – and has never been knocked down. He has fought his way to become one of the most lucrative and watched boxers in the business.
Speaking on his legacy and where it fits within the storied Mexican fighting history, trainer Robert Garcia told FightHype Canelo is already the best the country has produced many ways.
“Look, to just the regular fans [Julio Cesar] Chavez is always gonna be number one. Chavez is never gonna be moved from that position, but I could say Canelo already surpassed Chavez in many ways. Just in boxing itself, he’s already accomplished more than Chavez ever did.
But when it comes to the love of Mexican fans ain’t nobody ever gonna beat Chavez. I have to say Chzvez because of that reason, but when it comes to accomplishing more and doing more, maybe even getting bigger wins, I think Canelo already did better. But we’re never gonna see Canelo in a fight like Chavez was against Meldrick Taylor. We’re never gonna see Canelo in a fight like Morales-Barrera did. He’s too smart. He takes care of his health. He fights to win without getting hit. He doesn’t get dropped or cut.
Those are the reasons why he’s already surpassed everybody. To me, he probably is the best Mexican of all time. As a fan, no, because we want to see the blood, the knockdowns, the get up from the knockdown and knock out your opponent.”
Garcia – who currently corners the likes of Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez and Vergil Ortiz Jr – then pointed to the fact that Alvarez, who started fighting professionally when he was just 15, hasn’t yet faced David Benavidez.
“Just the fact that Canelo is not fighting Benavidez is already something that goes against him when it comes to fans and Mexico. But then again, he doesn’t have to prove nothing to nobody.”
Canelo is due out again in May of 2025. It won’t be Benavidez, who has decided to pursue belts up at light-heavyweight.
