Ring Magazine Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia has weighed in on the upcoming mega-fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.
The pound-for-pound superstars are set to clash in Las Vegas this September, with Canelo’s unified WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles at stake.
The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico has been a dominant force at 168lbs since achieving undisputed status in 2021, defeating the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia.
‘Bud’ Crawford’s triumph over WBA light middleweight champion Israil Madrimov last August saw the 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska become a four-weight world champion, as he now sets his sights on the biggest test of his glittering career when he bids to defeat Canelo and become a five division world champion.
Speaking to ESNEWS, Garcia was asked to give his prediction on the mega-fight between Canelo and Crawford, as he leaned towards the Mexican to prevail.
“I do probably pick Canelo also, but Crawford will put up a good fight.”
Although an official announcement is yet to be made, it has been reported this week that an agreement between both fighters is now in place, with the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas set to play host to one of the biggest fights in boxing this September.
Canelo is being linked with an interim fight in May, which could come against newly crowned IBF super middleweight champion William Scull who captured the vacant title after the Mexican icon was stripped of it, due to him favouring a clash with Edgar Berlanga rather than Scull, who defeated Vladimir Shishkin via unanimous decision last October.
