Some of boxing’s biggest names continue to react to Terence Crawford’s historic victory over Canelo Alvarez on Saturday.
Crawford cemented his status as the pound-for-pound number one fighter in the world as he defeated Canelo at the Allegiant Stadium to become the undisputed super-middleweight champion.
It was the first time that ‘Bud’ was campaigning at 168lbs, but despite stepping up two weight divisions he looked completely at home, as he overcame Canelo by unanimous decision after the judges scored it 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 in his favour.
A lot of boxing figures felt that Crawford could have won by an even wider margin, and top trainer Robert Garcia agrees with that, revealing to ESNews how he scored the bout.
“It was a beautiful performance from Crawford. He won most of the rounds, Canelo won maybe three rounds.”
Garcia then said that if a rematch was to take place, Canelo could avenge the defeat provided he makes some changes.
“He needs to make a change and do something different to motivate us to want to see the rematch. They could do the rematch and he could beat Crawford in the rematch if he makes some changes. They got too comfortable, too much money, too confident.”
The victory for Crawford saw him become the first male fighter in history to become undisputed in three divisions, going alongside his triumphs at super-lightweight and welterweight.
If a rematch with Canelo doesn’t happen next, ‘Bud’ may target middleweight instead, where a reigning world champion has already offered him a title shot.
