Terence Crawford versus Floyd Mayweather is a mouth-watering fantasy match-up.
Crawford is a current pound-for-pound contender by anyone’s standards. He has been undisputed in two separate weight divisions – lightweight and welterweight – and in his last fight moved up to super-welterweight to dethrone the 154 ruler Israil Madrimov and pick hip a world title in a fourth division.
Mayweather is a legend of the sport who won world titles in several different weight classes and retired unbeaten with a record of 50 and 0. He is often a yardstick against which all other top fighters are measured and compared to.
On the back of that performance, top trainer Robert Garcia, who coaches the likes of Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez and Vergil Ortiz, told ESNEWs that ‘Money’ could still comeback and beat plenty of current world champions.
“Mayweather could still beat a lot of champions. Maybe at welterweight, he could beat most of the champions right now. He’ll probably beat [WBA regular champion] Eimantas Stanionis, [WBC champion] Mario Barrios, [WBO champion] Brian Norman Jr.”
But on whether Mayweather could return and beat ‘Bud’, Garcia gave him no chance.
“Crawford is too big and strong for him at this moment. Mayweather’s 46, 47 actually, so there is no way.”
Crawford continues to be linked with a range of opponents but promoter Eddie Hearn believes we may only see him return to the ring if he can land a fight against current super-middleweight champion, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
