Top trainer Robert Garcia, who currently coaches pound-for-pound star Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, has made his prediction ahead of a potential fight between Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez and David Benavidez.
Benavidez has long been chasing a shot at Canelo’s super-middleweight titles but so far to no avail.
Even though it’s a fight fans and those within the sport have been calling for, the undisputed 168lb champion has shown little interest in making it happen – claiming that Benavidez brings nothing to the table other than an extra 25lbs on fight night.
Canelo has said to face ‘The Mexican Monster’ he wants $150m-$200m.
Speaking to ES News Garcia, who has also trained the likes of Anthony Joshua and Mikey Garcia, believes it would be a ‘very tough’ night for Canelo and predicts Benavidez to get his hand raised.
“That’s a tough on. Canelo could win but for me personally I pick Benavidez, I would love to see it, I don’t see it happening but I would love to see it. Canelo could win but I think there is a bigger chance he could lose, it’s a very difficult fight for Canelo.”
The 27-year-old grew tired of waiting for his shot at Canelo and moved up to light-heavyweight for his last outing, comfortably outpointing former champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
He now has a decision to make – either move back down and try to force the WBC to honour his mandatory position or stay at 175 and be first in line to face the winner of the undisputed fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
