Terence Crawford continues his pursuit of Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez.
‘Bud’ Crawford recently joined Alvarez in the four-weight world champion club but isn’t content staying put at super-welterweight, rather he wants to jump up a further two divisions to super-middle for the challenge.
Canelo, whilst nowhere near as interested in the fight, has stated he will listen to offers. He has previously said he would get little credit for beating a smaller man.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, acclaimed trainer Robert Garcia didn’t have a problem with Crawford chasing greatness given all he has achieved up until this point.
“I think it’s the fight Terence Crawford’s looking for. It’s the biggest fight out there for him. He’s done so much in boxing that he doesn’t need to challenge himself against nobody else. If there’s a Canelo fight then he’ll take it because it’s a huge payday for him and if not I don’t think he’ll fight again. I don’t think he has to fight anymore. He’s already accomplished so much, secured himself well. He’s a smart man. He’s not spending his money crazy like other fighters do. He lives a normal life, he’s got his family, kids, takes care of every one else around him.”
However, Garcia – basing his prediction off of Crawford’s latest win over Israil Madrimov and Canelo’s against Edgar Berlanga – feels the strength of the Mexican is too much for the American to overcome.
“He’ll put up a good fight. I probably don’t see him winning, but I do see him putting up a good six, eight rounds. I think he’ll put up some good rounds. After that, I see Canelo taking over, but I think those first six rounds would be very close, maybe Crawford would be ahead. I think he could win some rounds against Canelo.
Terence is very strong physically and mentally … I think Canelo’s power and strength in the late rounds, that’s where Crawford starts to get into trouble.”
Crawford is currently in a negotiation period with Sebastian Fundora for a super-welterweight unification fight. Canelo is slated to return in May of next year.
