Talk of a potential Terence Crawford versus Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez fight won’t go away.
Whether or not it happens is another matter. The obvious issue is the weight difference between the two men. Canelo has been as high as light-heavyweight and won a world title, though also lost in that division to Dmitry Bivol.
Crawford is a former undisputed lightweight champion who repeated that feat in the welterweight division when he beat Errol Spence Jr in July 2023.
In Canelo’s last outing, he successfully defended his three super middleweight titles against Edgar Berlanga as he has done several times against the likes of John Ryder and Jaime Munguia, but has not had a stoppage in any of his last five fights.
Robert Garcia, who trains the likes of Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez and Vergil Ortiz, was also expecting Canelo to stop his man.
“It was a great fight I think they both put in a great fight. I thought, like everyone else, that Canelo was going to knock him out, but Berlanga came in ready to fight. He got knocked down pretty good but got up like nothing and fought really well. It was a good fight.”
Right now many fans want him to take on former world champion David Benavidez but as of yet, nothing has materialised so talk of a fight with Crawford continues.
Garcia has given his prediction if were it to happen and believes the size difference will prove decisive and will get Crawford ‘into trouble’ later in the fight.
“[Crawford will] put up a good fight, I don’t see him winning but I see him putting up a good six, eight rounds. After that, I see Canelo taking over but I think those first six rounds will be very close, or maybe Crawford would be ahead. I could see him win some rounds against Canelo.
Terence is strong physically and mentally and you need that, so he does put up some rounds. I don’t think he will win cause it will be tough for him. Canelo’s power, strength in the late rounds, that’s where Crawford starts getting into trouble.”
