Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez continues to carve out an incredible legacy in the sport of boxing, but where will it sit amongst the records of his countrymen?
Canelo is a four-division world champion who will have the chance in May to become two-time undisputed at super middleweight. He has lost just twice in 66 fights, being beaten by Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol.
Comfortably the biggest star in the sport for some time, Alvarez has rarely been seen hurt in the ring and has never been knocked down or stopped.
Hall of Famer and a man with a claim as one of the best fighters in the history of the sport, Roberto Duran, has weighed in on the debate of where Canelo will sit amongst the all-time great Mexican fighters.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, the four-weight world champion who competed over five decades had high praise for Canelo.
“I would put him as one of the best that has ever come out of Mexico. Might be tough for some to swallow. But I put him as one of the best Mexico has ever had up to this point, because after Canelo there hasn’t been anyone that has come up yet. He’s the man of the hour, and giving Mexico fame.
“Theres no one else. Nobody else. For me Canelo is the best there is right now. Theres no one like Canelo.”
Asked specifically if he could go down in history as the best Mexican fighter ever, Duran said yes.
“Why not? Why not? Fans say no way… because he’s not on the level of Chavez Sr. I’ll just shut up and not say anything.”
Next up in May is the unification bout against William Scull. Should he win as expected, Alvarez will them move straight into a September mega fight against Terence Crawford, welcoming the American up two divisions.
