Roberto Duran has weighed in on the credentials of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Known more commonly as ‘Hands Of Stone’, Duran is unquestionably one of the greatest fighters to have ever laced up the gloves. His career spanned just over three decades, where he won world titles across four weight divisions.

Duran fought on 119 occasions during his tenure, suffering defeat just 16 times. His most famous victory came in June 1980 when he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard via unanimous decision to capture the WBC world welterweight title, although he would go on to taste defeat in their rematch just 5-months later.

One fighter who believes he would have been successful during Duran’s prime era, which included fighters such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns, is retired five-weight world champion Mayweather Jr.

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Duran admitted he ‘laughed’ when Mayweather claimed he would have thrived during that golden generation of fighters.

“I laugh when Floyd Mayweather says that if he went back in time he would beat us all. I’ll tell you this: if he was in the same era as Hagler and Hearns and Leonard and me, I don’t think he would be such a big name. There is too much talk.”

‘Money’ drew the curtain on his glittering career back in 2017, just a short while after he won the 50th and final contest of his tenure against MMA legend Conor McGregor in August of that year. The 48-year-old from Grand Rapids, Michigan remained unbeaten throughout his entire career, defeating the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez during his campaign.
