Floyd Mayweather’s Long Time Coach Roger Mayweather Said Only One Fighter Was Better Than Floyd

Roger Mayweather played a pivotal role in the glittering professional career of nephew Floyd.

Floyd Mayweather is often regarded as being one of the greatest fighter to have ever laced up the gloves, winning world titles in no less than five weight divisions throughout the course of his tenure.

He began working with his uncle Roger back in 1996, just a few months after he walked away from the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia with a featherweight bronze medal.

Mayweather would go on to defeat a number of generational greats under the guidance of his uncle, including Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya, Juan Manuel Marquez and Shane Mosley.

Despite playing such a crucial role in his nephew’s journey to the pinnacle of the sport, Roger once revealed in an interview that he actually ranks the late-great Sugar Ray Robinson ahead of Floyd as being the ‘greatest fighter ever’.

“[Floyd] is ranked right behind Sugar Ray Robinson. He won seven world titles didn’t he? He beat everyone from 130 to 154. Where would you put him at? Ray Robinson is the greatest ever period. I don’t care what circumstance, Ray Robinson is the greatest fighter in the history of boxing.”

Robinson took boxing by storm throughout his 25-year career, which spanned between 1940 and 1965. He reigned as the world welterweight champion from 1946 to 1951 before making the move up to middleweight, where he would win the world championship at 160lbs on five occasions during a nine year period.

He is perhaps best known for his memorable battles with the likes of Jake LaMotta, Randolph Turpin, Carmen Basilio and Gene Fullmer amongst many others.
