Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez has been defeated just twice in 67 fights. Rolando Romero believes he knows the third man to best the elite Mexican.
Canelo has lost to Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol, both on points, but has been dominant in the super-middleweight ranks, where he now reigns undisputed for a second time following a win over William Scull.
With that win he now moves into a big fight with Terence Crawford in September.
Speaking to FightHype, ‘Rolly’ Romero – who is coming off a career-best win over Ryan Garcia – backed Canelo to beat Crawford in September but says if he ever fights David Benavidez – newly crowned WBC Light-Heavyweight World Champion – he will lose convincingly.
“What the f**k has Canelo done in a very long time? … Yeah, I’m picking him to beat Bud [Crawford] but that doesn’t mean anything. I know Benavidez is gonna beat his f***ing ass. Because Benavidez is not fighting for a cheque, Benavidez is fighting because he wants to f***ing win. That’s the difference, you don’t see that? Every fight Benavidez comes to win.”
Canelo has been dismissive of the Benavidez fight despite fan demand, and it is now looking more unlikely than ever since the latter has moved up to light-heavyweight and has no plans to drop back down to super-middle.
Canelo is not averse to moving up one division again, as he has done twice before, but has made it clear that he would only do so for a rematch with Dmitry Bivol.
