WBA welterweight champion Rolly Romero has shared his thoughts on the controversial match-up between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul.
Two-time world heavyweight champion ‘AJ’ is set to face Paul in an eight round heavyweight clash at the Kaseya Center in Miami on Friday December 19, the latest major boxing event to be shown exclusively on Netflix.
The announcement of the controversial bout sent shockwaves through the sport, with many questioning whether ‘The Problem Child’ is taking it a step too far when he locks horns with Joshua next week.
‘AJ’ has been out of action since he was beaten for the fourth time in his career by former IBF world heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in September 2024.
As for Paul, the 28-year-old made his return to the ring on June 28 when he outpointed former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez in Anaheim, California.
The bout has garnered plenty of opinions from the boxing world, with Romero now the latest to do so, having defeated Ryan Garcia last time out, another man that has been linked to a fight with Paul over the years.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Romero claimed that the odds are stacked in Paul’s favour going into the bout as he says he believes ‘The Problem Child’ would not take the fight if he didn’t ‘truly believe’ he could walk away victorious.
“Let me ask you this right? Why would Jake Paul fight Anthony Joshua unless he truly believes he can win? Jake Paul has plot armour. When you have plot armour it’s like watching Harry Potter right? … When you just have plot armour you’re gonna win no matter what.”
As revealed by Most Valuable Promotions last month, both fighters will be required to wear 10oz regulation gloves on fight night. Joshua must also weigh no more than 245lbs, although it remains to be seen whether this will play into the hands of ‘The Problem Child’.
