Terence Crawford will challenge Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez in the super-middleweight ranks later this year.
The American has long called for the fight, but many feel that going up against a naturally bigger man in Alvarez, plus the fact he has one of the best chins in the business, is a step too far for the pound-for-pound star.
Speaking to Fighthype.com, multi-division world champion Roy Jones Jr said that he believes it’s a ‘great fight’ despite some feeling the weight jump is too much.
He said that it is Canelo’s fight to lose, but one slip up against elite operator Crawford can cost him.
“Man, it’s a great fight for boxing. I know people don’t agree with it. But, if Canelo fights one increment of the wrong fight, he’s gonna lose. If he comes out and fights the right fight, it’s gonna be a tough one. So, right now I think it can go either way, but it depends on what type of fight Canelo fights.”
Asked how Crawford should handle jumping up two divisions from his last outing, Jones advised him to bulk up as much as possible.
“Come in as big as he can get. If he can get to the weight limit, because there is a weight limit, get to the weight limit.”
Crawford will sit out until the fight takes place, set for Las Vegas in September.Meanwhile, Canelo looks to win back the IBF belt he was stripped of against new champion William Scull in May. Should he be victorious as most expect, he will put all four belts on the line, giving Crawford the chance to become undisputed in a third weight class.
