Roy Jones Jr is in his mid-50s but is seriously considering a return to the ring.
The last time he laced up the gloves was in 2023 when he lost a decision to Anthony Pettis. It was his 76th fight, and left him with a record of 66 wins and 10 losses.
Jones is a living legend of the sport, with a famously slick style and various records to his name, including being ranked as pound-for-pound number one during his heyday.
The American defied all expectations by moving up through the weights and winning titles at super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight, having won his first belt down at middleweight.
Speaking to WEAR Channel 3 News, Jones Jr spoke about a series of events which has got him thinking about a return to the ring.
“For some strange reason, last time I travelled, I watched George Foreman’s movie, many things stuck in my head with the comeback at 44. I watched Muhammad Ali’s movie. Again, the thing that stuck in my head was how often he came back. It’s not coincidental I saw those things. I’m not a movie watcher, but because I know George and I know Muhammad, it made me think, is God talking to me? Is he trying to tell me something?”
He then named three men he has called out whom he expects not to reply, starting with 50-year-old former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
“He’s not gonna respond, he doesn’t want this trouble. Jake Paul ain’t gonna respond, Logan Paul ain’t gonna respond. They don’t want this problem … Those three.”
Jones has also called for a rematch with Mike Tyson, having previously shared the ring with him in an exhibition match in 2020. Should he insist on returning, it would be this king of safer, non-professional contest fans would much prefer.
After an extremely successful UFC career, Silva has boxed on a few occasions, beating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr but losing to Jake Paul, the second man on Jones’ hit list who controversially fought Tyson last year. Jones also mentioned a bout against UK crossover star, KSI.
