Roy Jones Jr Names The Only Fighter He Wishes He Could Have Faced During His Career

Roy Jones Jr has a long and decorated career which means that his place in boxing history has long been assured.

The Floridian known as ‘Superman’ turned professional back in 1989 after winning a light-middleweight silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics. He went on to hold multiple world championships in four weight classes including middleweight, super-middleweight, light-heavyweight, and heavyweight and is regarded now as one of the best to ever lace up the gloves.

He fought a fine list of names across his career including the likes of Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Antonio Tarver, Felix Trinidad and Joe Calzaghe and ended with a record of 76 fights, 66 wins, 47 by knockout.

Speaking to ES NEWS, however, he was asked who he would like to have fought if he could pick any fighter from any era and he went with an all-time great who won titles at lightweight, welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight while also going on a 91-fight unbeaten streak – Sugar Ray Robinson.

“Sugar Ray Robinson. It would have been a good fight but I think I would have been too big for him, little more powerful. It would have been a good fight cause he boxed well, but I think I’d have been too big for him.”

Jones’ was able to fulfil one of his fantasy fights when he had an eight-round exhibition with the former heavyweight king Mike Tyson in July 2020. The contest lasted the distance and was ruled a draw, and soon Tyson will return to the ring to take on Jake Paul, a man almost 30 years his junior.
