Roy Jones Jr Reveals The Huge Mistake Joshua Made Against Dubois: “He Needs To Learn That Lesson”

Roy Jones Jr thinks he could have prevented Anthony Joshua from getting knocked out by Daniel Dubois.

Joshua was attempting to become a three-time world heavyweight champion, a feat previously accomplished by the likes of the great Muhammad Ali. In the opposite corner however was Dubois, who is very much the form man of the division right now.

As well as stopping Joshua in the fifth round of their contest in front of a record crowd at Wembley in September, he stopped Fillip Hrgovic back in June, and did the same to Jarrell Miller in the final seconds of their 10-round contest last December in Saudi Arabia.

Joshua was caught heavy and sent to the canvas at the end of the first round and never really recovered. The loss was his fourth overall having previously been defeated by Andy Ruiz Jnr, which he avenged in the rematch, and twice to former undisputed heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk.

Speaking to the Overdogs podcast, former multi-weight champion Jones Jr had plenty of advice for Joshua, while others have suggested he should retire.

“First he’d learn a lesson that you don’t run up on a wounded animal, cause a wounded animal is a dangerous animal. There are so many lessons he could have learned from me that would have probably saved his life in the fight.”

He shared another before admitting he was happy to not have been involved.

“When a man is in your distance, use your arms to keep distance so he can’t come to your face.

“So many things I could have did but the mistake he made for me, when I asked him about it, he said he want to come see me.

“Then I talked to him again he was out with Derrick James and I said if you’re getting along good, don’t worry about it, I don’t want you to be confused. I backed off it and I’m kind of glad I did.”

Joshua had spoken about going into an immediate rematch but promoters Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren recently threw some doubt on that.
