Roy Jones Jr Names The One Fighter Who Would Beat Prime Floyd Mayweather: “You Don’t Understand”

Roy Jones Jr believes there is just one man that would have defeated Floyd Mayweather.

Jones himself had a professional career that most fighters could only wish for, beginning back in 1989 just a year after he walked away from the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul with a gold medal.

He went on to win world titles in four weight classes including the WBA heavyweight title which he won against all odds when he defeated John Ruiz in 2003.

As for ‘Money’ Mayweather, the former pound-for-pound superstar remained unbeaten for the entirety of his 21-year professional career, defeating all 50 of the opponents that he faced including the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya amongst others.

Speaking on ALL THE SMOKE FIGHT, Jones spoke fondly of the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard, responding to claims that he would have been beaten by Mayweather had they ever fought.

“To me, people don’t give him enough credit. People always say ‘Well Floyd would have beaten Sugar,’ no baby, Floyd is not as nearly as mean as Sugar was.”

Jones was then asked if he believes Mayweather would have had any chance in prevailing against Leonard, who is often regarded as being one of the greatest to have ever laced up the gloves.

“How? How you gonna keep him off him? Sugar is a dog. People don’t understand. Just because his name’s Sugar don’t mean nothing! Sugar is a dog, people don’t give him enough credit for that.”

‘Sugar Ray’ was one of the most dominant fighters of the eighties, defeating the likes of Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns during this golden era for boxing.

Leonard won world titles in five divisions throughout his tenure, including the undisputed welterweight championship which he captured when he defeated Hearns in their iconic showdown back in 1981.
