Roy Jones Jr has worked closely with Chris Eubank Jr., so is well placed to talk about a potential match-up with Canelo Alvarez.
The American boxing legend and multi-weight champion started coaching Eubank Jr in 2020 and remained by his side for a couple of years and successful fights against the likes of Marcus Morrison and Liam Williams.
Their final fight was against Liam Smith, which ended with Eubank’s first KO loss. After the split, Eubank rematched Smith with Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre in his corner and won with a KO of his own six months later.
Since then he has also fought and beaten Conor Benn back in April in a tough 12 rounder, and will rematch his long-time rival this November.
However, Eubank has already mentioned a list of potential opponents if he is to win, and the Mexican multi-weight champion and former undisputed super-middleweight ruler Canelo is one of them.
Speaking to TitanPlay, Jones Jr broke down how the fight between the two might go, fully backing the Brit despite the extreme difference in level of opposition and consistency.
“Without question [he can beat Canelo]. He’s always had the tools to beat Canelo. The only thing – like with Crawford – is if he can take the punch. If he can, he’ll beat Canelo. He has a very good engine, he knows how to box now. He’s not just a puncher – I taught him how to box myself, so I know he knows how to box. He could definitely beat Canelo as long as he can take the punch.”
Eubank has never won one of the four major world belts and challenged just once for it when he lost a WBA super-middleweight title fight with George Groves back in 2018.
