Roy Jones Jr continues to push for a big money comeback bout, and he has set his sights on an extremely lucrative match-up.

The four-weight world champion is widely regarded as one of the most talented fighters to ever lace up the gloves. With an endlessly watchable style, Jones became the first man to win a heavyweight world title after doing the same at middleweight in over 100 years.

He believes he still has what it takes to thrill fans. He has mentioned fights against the likes of Jake Paul and Tommy Fury, but it is Floyd Mayweather who now finds himself in the line of fire.

Mayweather recently posted four clips of himself watching Jones being knocked out – likely a response to a recent fantasy fight prediction by Jones in which he said Mayweather would lose to Sugar Ray Leonard. It may have also been the final straw, as Jones is on the record criticising Floyd’s claim as the best fighter in the history of the sport.

Regardless of the motivation behind it, the back and forth is now in full swing as Jones has responded to ‘someone sending him a subliminal message’ with a fight offer.

“What’s happening fight fans around the world? I know y’all enjoy this thing of boxing, how we play games and people have their issues, opinions. That’s cool. I got opinions and I’m allowed to speak my opinions.

“If somebody was trying to send me a subliminal message, it works. If you want to prove that you’re better than me, I’m always ready. Wide open. Ready to go. Call me.”

Jones has made no secret of his plans for a comeback fight after his 2020 exhibition with Mike Tyson. In fact, he has never truly retired from the sport despite making his debut all the way back in 1989.

A bout with Mayweather would undoubtedly draw interest in the same way that Paul’s controversial fight with Tyson did last year. Does the sport need it? Absolutely not.
