Roy Jones Names The Best World Champion He Ever Faced After Winning Titles In Four Divisions

Four weight world champion Roy Jones Jr is unquestionably one of the greatest fighters of the last three decades.

He captured an Olympic silver medal at the 1988 games in Seoul, before going on to make his professional debut just 12-months later. He claimed world honours for the first time in 1993 when he defeated Bernard Hopkins via unanimous decision to pick up the vacant IBF world middleweight title.

In the years that followed, Jones racked up victories against WBA champion Lou Del Valle and IBF champion Reggie Johnson to unify the 175lb division, before he was eventually beaten by Antonio Tarver in their second encounter in May 2004.

Before he faced Tarver for the first time, Jones made a sensational move up to heavyweight where he dethroned WBA champion John Ruiz, outpointing ‘The Quiet Man’ at the beginning of 2003.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Jones made no mistake in naming James ‘Lights Out’ Toney as the best fighter he ever faced, as he claims the three-division world champion had ‘everything’.

“As far as skill goes James Toney is definitely the best fighter I have ever been in there with and it will never change. James had everything: he had offence, he had defence, he had movement, he had everything. So when you talk about a complete fighter there are not many complete fighters being built every day.”

Jones and Toney fought eachother back in 1994, in a bout that was described as ‘The Uncivil War’. After an entertaining 12-round match-up, Jones was declared the winner via unanimous decision to capture Toney’s IBF world super middleweight title.
