Roy Jones Jr has revealed exactly how he scored the monumental clash between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez.
The judges at ringside scored the bout 115-113, 116-112 and 115-113 all in favour of the 37-year-old Omaha-native, who has written his name into the boxing history books once again by becoming the first male fighter of the modern era to win an undisputed championship in three weight classes.
Speaking to Boxing King Media just moments after the result was announced, Hall of Fame inductee Roy Jones had his say on how he scored the bout as he admits he had it very similarly to the judges – a draw through ten before Crawford pulled ahead.
“I scored it kind of like they had it, it was a very close fight coming down to the last two rounds but Bud pulled them out, he fought very smart, let Canelo wear himself down early and then he started fighting late, he was very smart.”
“It’s a close enough fight, it all depends on what you like, if you like Canelo’s aggression you could give it to Bud by like one or two rounds but if you like boxing, Bud won by a few more rounds.”
Crawford has hinted that he intends to continue with his boxing career into the future, with rumours circulating that he could make the jump down to middleweight in his next outing to add a sixth division to his legacy. Canelo has also said he will fight on, though who he targets remains to be seen, particularly if a rematch doesn’t happen.
